What happens if you forget to renew a domain

DomainsUpdated 31 October 2026 · 1 min read

The stages after a domain expires, the risk to your website and email, and how to prevent it.

Domains are rented per year. If one isn't renewed by its expiry date, it doesn't vanish immediately but goes through several stages — and the longer it's left, the costlier or harder it is to recover.

Stages after expiry

  1. The domain stops working. Websites and email on that domain go down.
  2. Grace period. The domain can still be renewed as usual. Its length varies by extension.
  3. Redemption period. The domain can still be recovered, but with a higher redemption fee.
  4. Released. After that, anyone can register the domain — including competitors.
Don't wait until it expires. Business email stops receiving messages as soon as the domain is inactive, and missed messages cannot be recovered.

How to prevent it

  • Resmi.ID sends reminder emails 30 days, 7 days, and 1 day before a domain expires. Make sure the ordering email is still active.
  • Renew your main business domain for several years at once.
  • Keep an eye on every domain's expiry date in the client area.
